Secrets of the Catholic City: Five Simple Steps to Sanctity

“We must pray a great deal and beg God not to chastise us and save us in time and for eternity,” Sr. Lucia once urged in carefully guarded yet revealing terms, as she spoke about the third part of Fatima’s Great Secret.[1] Compare those words of the Servant of God to the novel and empty mottos of our recent days, including the newest two: “Time for a change” and “Yes, we can.” In response to the senseless rhetoric and in hopes of restoring the social order of Christ the King, Catholics of good will are asking their fellows to make some changes of their own. Whatever changes must be made, however, must be in accord with God’s Will. In fact, it is past time for a universal epiphany amongst all true Catholics: In our homes, parishes, and Catholic apostolates, our common cause must be the public and solemn Collegial Consecration of Russia to the Immaculate Heart of Mary.

Right and just is the recent clarion call from Catholics asking other members of the Mystical Body of Christ to work together to “restore all things in Christ”
[2] for the eternal Church, upholding the teaching of St. Thomas Aquinas, maintains: “Each one is under obligation to show forth his faith, either to instruct and encourage others of the faithful, or to repel the attacks of unbelievers.[3] As the Angelic Doctor also explained, “In all ages, men have been divinely instructed in matters expedient for the salvation of the elect...and in all ages there have been persons possessed of the spirit of prophesy, not for the purpose of announcing new doctrines, but to direct human actions.”[4]
Such was the purpose of the Fatima revelations.

The Five Point Defense of the Catholic City
In praying and working for the Restoration of the Social Reign of Christ the King, all our actions as the Church Militant should be placed under the supreme battle plan given by Our Lady of Fatima, She who “cometh forth as the morning rising, fair as the moon, bright as the sun, terrible as an army set in array.”
[5]
Her battle plan is intended for each one of us, on an individual basis as a beloved child of God, a dutiful citizen of the Catholic City, and a stalwart soldier of Christ.

As children of God, we should approach Our Lord and Our Lady as little ones approach their parents on earth, full of love, confidence and hope.

As citizens of the Catholic City, we follow the Royal Road because it was first trod by Christ the King and His Virgin Mother, for as Our Lord taught, “If any man will come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me.”
[6]

As soldiers of Christ, our best defense is a good offense. The victorious “peaceful battle strategy” to “save us in time and for eternity” has been given to every single member of the Church Militant at Fatima by Our Mother and Mediatrix, Conqueror of Heresies:

1) The daily Rosary
2) Faithful accomplishment of daily duty (as Catholics and in our states in life)
3) Sacrifice for the conversion of sinners
4) The Brown Scapular of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel
5) The Five First Saturdays of Reparation.

Specific to the Pope, Steward of the Catholic City, Our Lady requested the Consecration of Russia to Her Immaculate Heart in union with all the bishops of the world.

The Collegial Consecration Campaign
Lest we think the term “peaceful battle” an oxymoron, let us also recall the Church’s counsel as explained by Pope Pius XI, Certainly there is the greatest need now of such valiant soldiers of Christ who will work with all their strength to keep the human family safe from the dire ruin into which it would be plunged were the teachings of the Gospel to be flouted, and that order of things permitted to prevail which tramples underfoot no less the laws of nature than those of God. The Church of Christ, built upon an unshakable rock, has nothing to fear for herself, as she knows for a certainty that the gates of hell shall never prevail against her…”

Venerable Brethren and Beloved Sons, let us not permit the children of this world to appear wiser in their generation than we who by the Divine Goodness are the children of the light. We find them, indeed, selecting and training with the greatest shrewdness alert and resolute devotees who spread their errors ever wider day by day through all classes of men and in every part of the world. And whenever they undertake to attack the Church of Christ more violently, We see them put aside their internal quarrels, assembling in fully harmony in a single battle line with a completely united effort, and work to achieve their common purpose.”

“Surely there is not one that does not know how many and how great are the works that the tireless zeal of Catholics is striving everywhere to carry out, both for social and economic welfare as well as in the fields of education and religion. But this admirable and unremitting activity not infrequently shows less effectiveness because of the dispersion of its energies in too many different directions. Therefore, let all men of good will stand united, all who under the Shepherds of the Church wish to fight this good and peaceful battle of Christ; and under the leadership and teaching guidance of the Church let all strive according to the talent, powers, and position of each to contribute something to the Christian reconstruction of human society…seeking not themselves and their own interests, but those of Jesus Christ, not trying to press at all costs their own counsels, but ready to sacrifice them, however excellent, if the greater common good should seem to require it, so that in all and above all Christ may reign, Christ may command to Whom be ‘honor and glory and dominion forever and ever.’ ”
[7]

In heeding the Fatima Virgin’s gentle commands, we can do more than imitate “the children of this world” who “put aside their internal quarrels, assembling in fully harmony in a single battle line with a completely united effort, and work to achieve their common purpose.” In our own private lives, in our homes and in our various Catholic apostolates, we are already united because we are members of the Mystical Body of Christ. For what other common purpose should we spiritually join forces other than to accomplish what Our Lady of Fatima asked, by praying the daily Rosary and sacrificing for the conversion of sinners, making our foremost intention the collegial consecration of Russia to the one and only Immaculate Heart? Why would we not collectively pray and work for “The Collegial Consecration Campaign” ?

Our Lady and Catholic Action
Yes, we can” take other important Catholic steps, from homeschooling our children to participating in various volunteer efforts, subscribing to tried-and-true traditional Catholic papers, and much more. At the same time, we must realize that these worthy efforts, which can save individuals and whole families for eternity, will not bring forth worldwide conversion – which in turn will save hundreds of millions of souls. Our actions alone can neither destroy modernism (the synthesis of all heresies), nor effect the conversion of Russia nor grant an era of peace to mankind. Those are miracles reserved by God for Our Lady, who revealed at Fatima that only She can help us and who also said at Akita, “Those who place their confidence in me will be saved.”
[8]

“But seek ye first the Kingdom of God and His justice, and all these things shall be added unto you,”
[9]
as Christ Our Lord taught. “My Immaculate Heart will be your refuge and the path that leads you to God,” said Our Lady at Fatima. These words of Christ and His Virgin Mother complement each other, for as St. Bernadine of Siena explained, “Every grace that is communicated to this world has a threefold course. For by excellent order, it is dispensed from God to Christ, from Christ to the Virgin, from the Virgin to us.”

Our Lady and a Mystery of the Holy Trinity
The Rosary is the storehouse of blessings, wrote Blessed Alan de La Roche. Today, as Sr. Lucia revealed “… the Most Holy Virgin in these last times in which we live has given a new efficacy to the recitation of the Rosary… There is no problem, no matter how difficult it is, that we cannot resolve by the prayer of the Holy Rosary. With the Holy Rosary, we will save ourselves. We will sanctify ourselves. We will console Our Lord and obtain the salvation of many souls.”
[10]

In the following excerpts from Sr. Lucia’s private letters
[11], we may gain beautiful insights about the Rosary:

“Our Lady requested and recommended that the Rosary be prayed every day, having repeated this [request] in all the Apparitions, as if forewarning us that in these times of diabolical disorientation, we must not let ourselves be deceived by false doctrines that diminish the elevation of our soul to God by means of prayer.”

“For certain, it is not necessary that during the celebration of the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass that one pray the Holy Rosary, [for] besides time set aside for the Holy Mass, we must also put aside time for praying the Holy Rosary. We can and should take part in the one without forsaking the other.”

“The Rosary is, for the majority of souls who live in the world, their daily spiritual bread; and to deprive them or draw them away from this prayer is to decrease in their minds the appreciation and good faith with which they pray…”

“All the prayers that we say in the Rosary are prayers that form part of the Sacred Liturgy. More than a prayer directed to Our Lady, it is a prayer directed to God:

• “The Our Father was taught to us by Jesus Christ, Who said, ‘Pray thus, Our Father Who art in heaven…’ ”
• “Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost is the hymn sung by the Angels who were sent by God to announce the birth of His Word, God-made Man.”
• “The Hail Mary, when well understood, is nothing less than a prayer directed to God: ‘Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with Thee.’ I hail Thee, Mary, because the Lord is with Thee! These words were most certainly dictated by the Father in heaven to the Angel when He sent him to earth, in order that with these words he (the angel) should greet Mary.”

So this salutation [Hail Mary] is an act of praise addressed to God: Blessed art Thou amongst women because Blessed is the fruit of Thy womb; and because Thou are the Mother of God-made Man. In Thee, we adore God as in the first Tabernacle in which the Father enclosed His Word; as on the first Altar, Thy lap; as in the first Monstrance, Thy arms, before which the Angels, shepherds and kings knelt to adore the Son of God made Man!”

Sr. Lucia also alluded to a mystery of the Holy Trinity, as well as a mystery of Our Lady’s earthly life and Her life in heaven when Sister wrote, “Since Thou art a Tabernacle, a Monstrance, a living Temple, permanent home of the Holy Trinity, Mother of God and our Mother – ‘pray for us poor sinners, now and at the hour of our death.’ ”

What a breathtaking contemplation as we pray the Rosary – in Heaven and in eternity, Our Lady is the Perpetual Tabernacle of the Holy Trinity! Volumes might be written about this Mariophany but, for now, let it suffice to ask ourselves: Is it any wonder that to save us “in these last days” that the Rosary, which is an act of praise to God, is given a new efficacy? Or that Our Lady asked us to pray it every day? Or that Jesus wills Russia’s consecration to His Mother’s Immaculate Heart, so that one day the whole world will honor Her Heart next to His own Sacred Heart?

After the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, the Rosary is the most highly indulgenced prayer of the Church, which grants a plenary indulgence (the complete remission of temporal punishments of confessed sins) every day of the year to those who pray the Rosary in a church, oratory, or with members of the family, in a religious Community, or in a pious association.
[12]

“Therefore, it is necessary to pray the Rosary in cities, in towns and in villages, in the streets, on the road, while traveling or at home, in churches and in chapels!” wrote Sr. Lucia. “It is a prayer that is accessible to all and everyone can and should pray. There are many who do not attend the liturgical prayer of the Holy Mass on a daily basis. If they do not pray the Rosary, what praying do they accomplish? And without prayer, who can be saved? Watch and pray that ye enter not into temptation.’ ”

“It is necessary, then, to pray and pray always,” Sr. Lucia concluded. “This means that all our activities and labors should be accompanied by a great spirit of prayer. It is in prayer that the soul meets God. In this meeting, grace and strength are received, even when one’s prayers are accompanied by distractions. Prayer always brings an increase of Faith to souls, even if it be no more than a momentary remembrance of the Mysteries of our Redemption – recalling the Birth, Death and Resurrection of Our Savior; and God will dismiss and pardon those distractions attributed to human weakness, ignorance and littleness.”

That Thy Kingdom come, let the reign of Mary come,” wrote St. Louis Marie de Montfort. The reign of Mary is the same era of peace promised by Our Lady of Fatima. It was to save us “in time and for eternity” that the Mother of God came to Fatima, giving God’s five-point “peaceful battle plan” to all of the Church’s children, while appointing a special task to the Vicar of the Church and the bishops.

It is a sanctifying strategy we can share with others as we ourselves live it, always making our foremost intention the Collegial Consecration of Russia to the Virgin’s Immaculate Heart. By these means we can follow the sound spiritual advice of Sr. Lucia, confidante of Heaven:
“It is necessary for each one of us to begin to reform himself spiritually. Each person must not only save his own soul but also help to save all the souls that God has placed on our path.”
